I've read on here women saying not to reach for anything too high when you're pregnant, and not to lift things? Why??How much weight is too much? I work out and use weights, usually no more than 15 pounds or so. Isn't lifting a child you already have heavier?? Why is that ok, and lifting groceries or anything else not? Sorry this is my 1st pregnany and I don't know anyone around here who's been pregnant, new place! Thanks!!!!!

Quit using the weights in your workout. You can still workout but drop the weight training.
You cannot carry children.
Lifting anything moderately heavy (even if it never seemed heavy to you before) can strain your muscles and hurt you & endanger your baby.

I have two little girls, and I was worried about everything when I was pregnant. The first pregnancy was the worst, I was afraid to even take tylenol! You can reach for anything, don't let it scare you when people say if you reach above your head the umbilical cord will wrap around the baby's neck! My doctor who is an excellent one, told me there are so many old wives tales, but this will not happen! You can lift weights, but not extremely heavy ones! You don't want to put no more strain on your back, because the extra weight that your body puts on while pregnant will put a damper on your back. I had to lift throughout my whole second pregnancy, my first child was 2 years old and she weighed 30 pounds. The only way you are to stop lifting is if your doctor thinks your pregnancy is at risk, or if you have had miscarriages before. I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy. Don't listen to all the horror stories of pregnancy, each one of us is different, and it is truly an amazing experience that you will want to do again.

You should be able to continue working out with a routine you already have. While pregnant is not a good time to start something new. Exercise is very good for an easier labor. As for lifting, I have heard that also, but never had any problems. I have moved while 8-9 weeks pregnant. Lifting packing, stretching and lifting. Though I did leave heavy furniture to the men. One set of babies was 17 months apart, another was 13 months. I had no choice but pick them up and carry them everyday. It is a wives tale that stretching will wrap the cord around a babies neck.

That whole not lifting anything rumor is BS. It's an old wives tale. They say if you life your arms above your head you could wrap the cord around the baby's neck and choke it.

10-15lbs is a good limit, but if it makes you out of breath don't lift it.

Also, at the grocery store, ask the checker not to put anything heavy together in one bag. If they still do it, report them to the store manager.

Lifting kids is ok. But no one will let you. Believe me. I had my son in March, and from September(when I found out) until March(when I had him) everyone treated me like I was dying instead of pregnant.

You'll get a lot of "let me do that" and "you should rest" and "don't pick that up"

I'm like.....hello, i'm 20 and pregnant not 90 and dying. But no one listened.

But you'll be thankful for all the "let me do it"s and all that when you're about 6 months and your feet start swelling and your belly is so big when you lean across the table you bump things off into the floor! lol

I am 38 weeks and I have not been allowed to pick up my 2 yr old niece since I was 11 weeks. I had a very hard pregnancy. My employer at the time didn't believe I was actually pregnant and thet made me lift heavy things. I ended up in the hospital due to cramping and bleeding. Do NOT lift anything or anyone over 8-10 pounds. You can lift light groceries. This is my first full pregnancy also. I miscarried twins years ago. Please take it easy.

Well, if you notice, lifting heavy things puts strain on your abdomen. Lifting weights is a little different, though. If you lift something off the ground that's heavy, pay attention and you use your stomach muscles.
You are not supposed to lift things that are heavy once your baby starts growing. Once your belly gets bigger you shouldn't. Believe me, once your belly is big, you will feel the pain if you lift something heavy.
Get the book, "What to Except When You're Expecting" It has great tips on how to eat, how to work out, talks about the feelings you will/might have. It's perfect.

lifting your arms over your head is an old wives' tale...you can lift your arms over your head and carry things when you are pregnant, unless you have complications. The risk of lifting heavy things is that your back already has more pressure on it because of the pregnance and your center of gravity has changed so your balance is off. As long as you are strong enough to lift and lift correctly the worst thing you might have is a little bladder leakage.

Not true! At least, not exactly. I think a good rule of thumb would be, if you've been doing it regularly for years, continue. Maybe throttle back somewhat (or more toward the end of your term) with the awareness that your muscles, tendons and joints are loosening up to get your body ready for a larger version of your tiny passenger. As with any advice on What You Should Be Doing, please speak to your physician regarding specifics for your body.

You aren't supposed to lift anything heavy...you aren't even supposed to pick up children. You might want to check with your Dr to see if working out is ok for you
