Hey Sydney!

I too, write for young adults. (Check out my website at www.AmandaHubbard.com)

I have an agent, and she's working hard to read thru my latest version of my book because she had an editor at a major pub house show some interest.

First, get a critique partner. Someone in the same stage of writig as you, or higher. Go to Yahoo! Groups and run a search of writing groups.... if your book is Teen Chick-Lit, look for the teenchicklit group. There are tons of published and unpubbed wriers in this group. You can put out a message that you need a crit partner. Or you can find a YAHOO! group that is a critique group. Groups and Partners both have strengths and weaknesses.

Next, when you're SURE SURE SURE that you are ready to begin, (you've had other people look at it who aren't your best friends or relatives), you start looking for an agent. Check out www.agentquery.com, or go to the library and get the 2006 Writer's Market. Craft the perfect query, and send it off to atleast 10 agents.

Once you have an agent, the agent will worry about getting you published. She/he will get 15%, but she will get you a deal WAAAAAY faster then you could get one on your own.

Also, i reccomend checking out "Miss Snark" on blogspot. (Google her.) She is an 'undercover' agent...she wont say who she is, but she knows her stuff. Read her blog and learn all about the industry.

Good luck....go to my website and then you can read my journal (about my own young adult writing) or email me if you have more questions.

Before you even think of sending it off get it edited so they won't immediately scoff and throw it into the fireplace as you make many mistakes and no one likes that.
