1) It is overpopulated because of the "baby boom" after WWII, same as other countries. China has one child policy to curb population growth.

2) It is overcrowded in the big cities, and many eastern provinces. But basic on population density it is not overcrowded. China is 137 person per km2. Monaco has 23,660 per km2. Neherlands: 392, India: 336 per km2.

3) China has enough lands, and is encourging its citizens to move to western provinces where it is less populated. The Chinese economy is growing fast, so there are no mass emigration. In fact, lots of Taiwanese and overseas are going back to China to study and open business. Many foriegners are going to China because of the booming economy to invest and to work.

4) The government discourge emmigration, but it does allow it. Emmigration causes "brain drain" on the economy.

1. The nation is not OVERpopulated. The country is huge! Problem is, most people concentrate themselves in the cities. You only see picture taken in the cities, like Beijing an Hong Kong and see only squalor and people livinng on top of each other.
2. THOSE places are overcrowded. Liveable? They think so, but you or I might not.
3. They don't need more land. There is plenty of land. It only needs to be developed to the point that it provides food and living space enough. They are doing that now. It has taken them a long time because of the form of government they have had. It's not so much that they are a Communist nation. It's that is was a corrupt nation that did not foster the kind of changes needed for the REST of the nation. The reason Chinese people emmigrate is for the same reasons any one might chose to do it. Some think they can get a better life somewhere else. Many Americans emmigrate to Mexico upon retirement because their money goes farther.
4. It is hard for people to leave the country because the policies of the government are still quite repressive. For most people, however, it's that they cant afford to do it, so why bother to apply? Their government does fear losing people with the skills and talents they need to make the technological changes needed for them to progress into this century. Those people might find it very difficult to leave, even if they did have the money.

Chinese people are just as patriotic as anyone else. They have their customs and culture and some will tell you they can't envision any other way of life. Ask a dirt farmer in Kansas if he'd like to move to an apartment in London. I'd bet most would look at you funny and shake their heads.
