Because BBC do not advertise, so make their money from the licence, at least, this used to be the reason why.

I pay sky £30 odd a month and get hundreds of channels.
I pay another £10 a month for 4 bbc channels (or 2 of you have an old ariel and tv) which I must watch around once every 6 months.
They say 'well we don't do advertisments' yet there is still 5 minute breaks inbetween each show where they advertise their own shows.
Also what do you think 90% of the uk would chose if asked to pay £120+ a year or watch a few adverts?
Or why not make it subscription only and over sky/cable? Why not? Because nobody would pay that much for the crap they play.

It is considered a tax.
(Why do people still think they are paying for the BBC?)
The TV licence is demanded by a government department. The £3.5 BILLION the revenue it brings in is not demanded to pay for the BBC. Check your TV licence.
'WHAT YOU NEED A TV LICENCE FOR.
You need a TV Licence to install or use ANY equipment to receive or record television programmes, including a television, video recorder, satellite, PC card, TV enabled PC or any other TV receiving equipment.'
There is NO wording that states you are paying a fee to the BBC.
Put this into 'Search for questions'. 'BBC tv is it worth it ??'

I know sucks doesn't it. We pay for bbc cuz they don't do ads. I am wondering if in a few years digital tv will soar and there will be so many channels that the beeb might go the way of top of the pops. After all who would have ever thought totp would ever die eh?

To ensure that there is a independant media organisation free of influence from political and commercial pressure.
Just wish they would stop showing repeats.
