It will survive, but to fulfill it's purpose it must thrive. To thrive, it needs to attract fans. To attract fans, the level of play must increase.
MLS has been around some 10 years now, and the longer it survives, the better it will get. The key is for young players to have idols they can look up to, and a league they can dream of playing in.
Most of the current crop of US pro players did not have many US players to idolize, and try and emulate. This is changing.
As the sport becomes more popular, not only for the youth playing soccer, but for the average fan, the more MLS will be able to expand, and they will be able to bring in more foreign talent to raise the level of play.
The current assessment is that MLS is about on the level with the top European 3rd Divisions.

Soccer in the US will work but it needs to be better organised, the monopoly of teams around big cities.

I think it will survive. It is growing in popularity and with many many kids playing it these days, it will continue to grow.
