Raccoons generally feed at night, often times looking for discarded fruit and vegetables; they'll eat just about anything, really. The key to keeping raccoons at bay is to make your home a less inviting place to eat. Here are some tips:
Sealed or sheltered trash bins will discourage raccoons. Obviously, raccoons are digging through your trash to find a meal. Make sure you either keep your trash cans sealed (bound shut with cord) or put the trash in a small shelter, like a storage shed.
Fenced gardens will dissuade raccoons from feasting. Raccoons don't always look in the garbage to satisfy their hunger. Certain things in the garden, like small fruit will definitely suffice. If you can build a sturdy fence (electrified if possible) around your garden, you should see less raccoons hovering around your yard.
Live "Havahart" traps will help you get rid of raccoons. Far and away the best method of removing the nuisance of raccoons is to trap them live and bring them to a wooded area far away from your own home. Be careful though, raccoons will bite if they feel threatened. Wear thick gloves when handling the traps.
Motion-sensing lights and sound devices will keep raccoons away. The reason raccoons are nocturnal is because they're less vulnerable at night. Motion-sense lights and sound devices should scare the raccoons away, but don't depend on these devices for too long; eventually raccoons will learn they aren't really threatened.
Commercial repellents will stop raccoons. There are several online vendors of repellents, who claim that spraying their product on garbage cans and around yards will deter raccoons. Wolf urine is common, and has been recommended by wildlife specialists for quite some time

I had problems with them in my yard, but never in the house. They are obviously getting in somewhere.
First make sure that they are not already living in the house in a place like the chimney, the attic, or other storage areas. if the house is raised, check the foundation for any possible opening. these guys are experts and getting into small spaces. seal all possible entrances to the home.
for my outside problem i called an nucance animal removal company, but they wanted $50 for each animal they caught and removed. even if they caught a rat, squirrel, the neighbors cat, etc. it was $50. so i went online and found/purchased an animal trap. for about $50. i usually baited it with leftovers from the evening dinner. the very first night i i set it up, i caught one! then all i did was put the trap in the back of my truck and relocated the little guy to a wooded area about 15 miles away. legally, i am probably not supposed to do this, but it got rid of my raccoon problem, saved me a ton of money (i caught quite a few) and i never hurt a single one.

With extreme difficulty. If it is easy for a cat, it will be almost wide open for a raccoon as they are very adept at opening closed items. You might need to investigate electronic locks on a cat door that respond to chips implanted in the cats' collars (or their implant chips if you have gone that route). No idea if such a thing exists, but if not get together with a techie and make it yourself. I'm sure it will create it's own market as dogs will also need it. Good luck.

They can leave a radio on, leave the lights on, get a dog, keep all pet food up if they do have animals, Set live animal traps for them so they will not be harmed, and relocate them. usually raccoons come looking for food, if there is no food, they will go away.

A co-worker of mine had this problem. He ended up trapping them himself and releasing them in the woods. You can also call animal control to come out and set up traps.
