I think the whole Zidane-Materazzi affair has been blown out of proportion because it happened during a World Cup final, with billions of people viewing it all over the world. Plus, Zidane is an internationally known champion and a football legend, like Pele or Maradona. Nobody knew Materazzi before the incident.
Fewer people follow the Euro Cup, and Totti isn't known worldwide as Zidane is.
But you are right. When Totti spit, Italians were ashamed of him, and didn't stand up for his stupid action. They didn't ask Uefa to investigate, prosecute the Danish player for what he could have told Totti, or hire lawyers so that the game could be replayed. Totti spit and he was wrong. That's unacceptable on the pitch.
What Zidane did was even more serious because he headbutted another player, he didn't just spit at him. That's physical aggression and it's totally unacceptable on the pitch. If I was French, I would be ashamed of Zidane, just like I was ashamed of Totti, or even more.
But the price at stake was the Wolrd Championship, and a whole nation is deluding herself that the trophy would be in Paris now, hadn't Materazzi trash talked Zidane and hadn't Zidane headbutted him.
Wait... saying a whole nation would be wrong. Some French people are truly ashamed of what Zidane did, they accept that they lost and if they are mad at someone, they are mad at Trezeguet for missing that penalty. However, the press and the President stood up for Zidane, so that's the impression that the whole world got.
I don't want to get political now, but really, I don't know who is a bigger idiot... Bush or Chirac? They make a good pair! ;-)

They're making Zidane out to be the victim here when it's actually Materazzi. there's a place in the chest if you hit it hard enough your heart just stops beating. yeah and Zidane was pretty close to that spot and it sure looked hard enough to me.Zidane could have killed Materazzi, or sent him to the hospital. Same with that other guy he headbutted.

If all players who hurled insults during games were to be punished, especially during the World Cup, there would be no players left on the field. Turn a deaf ear, turn the other cheek, walk away, or even better... if you get pissed off, use that energy in your game... use your head (but not to headbutt like Zidane).

ZiRam needs to go back to kindergarten school and learn the lesson, "stick's and stone's will break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"
Should we ALL be allowed to physically harm someone who offends us verbally? Should a spouse head-butt the other spouse when they have an argument? Does the police ever punish the provoker of words? NO.
Materazzi should not be punished. To do so flies against all rules of logic and law.

Football is a game of both physical prowess and mental prowess.
They knew of Zidane's history and witht he game on the line, engage in an act of sabotage.
Zidane never had to fall for it, but the Italians knew he would.
They understood him better than he did. The italinas, by whatever means, earned the Cup.

MATERAZZI SHOULD DEFFENETLY BURN IN HELL!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THERE IS DIRTY TALKING ON A GAME BUT IF SOMEONE INSULTS A RELATIVE OR SOMEONE WE LOVE OR APPRECIATE VERY MUCH THEN THAT IS A VERY DIFFERENT STORY. EVERYBODY KEEPS BLAMING ZIDANE FOR EVERYTHING BUT MATERAZZI SHOULD BE THE ONE PUNISHED FOR HAVING LITTLE ETHICS. BESIDES, LET'S THINK ON A HUMAN WAY, HOW WOULD WE REACT, INSTEAD OF JUDGING SOMEBODY.

well, the Italians r vicious, u can't deny that... ppl r saying u kno Zidane did this, Zidane did that... the way ppl r going on, it sounds like it's okay 2 call a guy a mo fo' or c*** or something like that, but it's not okay to get physical... I don't condone wat Zizou did, but Materazzi isn't innoccent either... They both should hav been sent off...BTW, do u believe that the official saw wat happened, coz i sure as hell don't...everyone saw him looking @ the replay, it was sooo obvious

zidane is surely the culprit.
He headbutted materazzi just bcoz he was the captain of his team & he had a lot of pressure on his shoulders & his inability to do something & his impatience made him do this horrible act

they were both wrong.
materazzi should thank zidane, he became famous after this incident, but poor zidane, he humilated his self infront of alot people by head butting an unknown guy just to revenge.
