I think heeled sandals are the most appropiate (3" or more of height)... also closed toe pumps are not as appropiate... but flat are a TOTAL NO...
what do you think?

I don't think that it matters as long as you don't show up in dirty old tennis shoes. Flats, closed-toe pumps, and heeled sandals are all fine, though.

From your question, it sounds as if you know that formal attire will be required of the guests.

This may be so, but it may also be the case that this is just an assumption on your part. If it is not expressly stated, then there may be more flexibility in the dress expectations of guests...particularly if the wedding is a daytime event or at an informal locale (like the beach).

If it is absolutely known that the event is formal, the shoes that are chosen should correspond to the dress and to your own overall presentation. It is much less likely that you could find a flat that is suitably dressy enough to compliment formal wear, but it is possible. Without fully excluding flats, I'd say that the other shoe options you mention are more desirable and should be considered first.

In response to whether heeled sandles or closed toe pumps are more appropriate, I would say it depends on a number of factors. One should consider what works with one's own complete presentation. In general (though not always), a pump would be more conservative than a heeled sandal...so whichever look works with how you see yourself and if both shoes are equally clean and dressy, then choose the appropriate option for you.

as long as they are smart it's ok the last wedding i went to the reception was straight away afterwards so it was a good thing i had flats (well actually they had a kitten heel) cos i did alot of dancing....but if there isn't going to be dancing or much walking i would wear heels because they are smarter and more formal but at my wedding i wouldn't care what anyone was wearing on their feet so if the bride doen't mind just wear what you feel comfortable in!

I went to a wedding where the bride wore flats, but it was really nice, it was summer, and you didn't see her shoes, anyway, her gown was too long, and they were like dainty ballet slippers, it looked really feminine. As for a guest, i would say no, but it really depends on the shoe. I have seen some really nice flat sandal -like dressy shoes that could work.

As long as they are cute and stylish. I prefer wearing flats, heels are way to ouncomfortable and if you are going to walking around in 3" heels? JCrew has a great selection on flats.

If you are not in the wedding party you can probably get away with a dressy delicate flat sandal.

If you are young I think flats are inappropriate. But if you are at a certain age where your feet hurt I think flats are ok as long as they look like sandals

i think that as long as the flats are in good condition and match the outfit they are appropriate for any occasion. some of the cutest shoes out there right now are the ballet style flats being worn with all kinds of outfits.

I think as long as they are nice and kind of dressy, it's a smart idea. You aren't going to have fun if your feet hurt all day. I plan to wear flat shoes to my own wedding.
