The Bible, both NT and OT, is filled with stories and parables about mankind overcoming adversity by both having faith in a higher power and the inner strength to be resolute in their actions. The key to this being the strength of the individual to see their task through to the end, asking God for guidance without desperation. You cannot petition the Lord with prayer.

Having said that with the full knowledge that there is no exact entry with the specific words "God helps those who help themselves", I am wondering if the majority of current Christians have lost sight of our free will and are now completely dependant upon faith without action. I am going to say again that I was raised Greek Orthodox and still follow the beliefs and lifestyle with which I had grown up.

In short, are most Christians only running on blind faith without reason?

I'm aware that some people don't read the Bible. Actually, a very large portion of the world's population doesn't read the Bible. The question isn't about them.

Also, Greek Orthodox doesn't mean that I grew up with a 1700 year old Bible and spoke in Ancient Greek. I am an Orthodox Christian whose roots are Greek. Like Russian Orthodox, or Coptic.

This is frustrating. When I say "A large portion doesn't read the Bible", I'm referring to the portion that isn't Christian. Please PLEASE use some common sense.

Yes, bible paper works well for rolling.

And yes, many Christians, particularly those of the extremely brainless Fundamentalist faction, do not use reason whatsoever.

The bible is not written in our dialect. People have to learn a whole new way of speaking to understand it. I've never heard anyone address this in any way except for they have their religious leader intemperate it for them. You wouldn't need an interpreter if it were written in your language. You also wouldn't need bible study. In another couple hundred years it will make no sense at all to people. It will be a completely different language.

The same thing could be said about our legal system. One of the reason you need so many lawyers is because contracts and laws are written in a different dialect that people just don't speak. So you need an interpreter. Usually the concepts in laws aren't complicated at all, it's just the language.

It's pretty dumb to have a societie's laws written in a language that that society doesn't speak. The same can be said for their religious text. Have someone translate the Bible to modern English and more people will read it.

In my view, you are absolutely correct. Most Christians that I have had conversations with do not really look at themselves to see how they're doing in their spiritual journey. They're saved, so don't seem to do much else except go to church to receive biblical teachings from their pastor/priest. That's not to say that some people are not faithful readers of the Bible, but those people are a minority. It's sad to think that things don't seem much different than the middle ages when people were illiterate in their own language and the Bible was written in Latin and Greek anyway.
