PhotoShop is just above my head. The layers and how to extract certian objects within the picture seems to be unnecessarily difficult. I need a program that will help me more with my usuage than Adobe. Adobe is just too advanced for my limited knowledge of editing software.

Hello.
If you are really a newbie when it comes to photo editing tools, just use, MSPaint.
Now if you think you are ready for a little more complication you can use GIMP.
In my very humble and not to mention cute opinion, Adobe photoshop is pretty straightforward and easy to learn.
I just go over to some tutorial websites and look at what they say.

Paint Shop and Paint Shop Pro are also options. I started with Paint Shop Pro and it's the only thing I've ever really used. It's a bit daunting, true.
MS Paint and Gimp, as they suggested, are other possibilities.
I'd suggest (if you want to keep trying at Photoshop) sitting down and playing around with it for a bit. Take a day you have off work or school and just experiment. Maybe say to yourself "I'm going to try all the overlay settings today."
Take a picture with a lot of color and see what duplicating layers and setting them to the different properties does, like Soft Light and Exclusion. Use the brush and texts to find out what you can and can't do on vector/raster layers, etc. Or perhaps get a manual or "For Dummies" book and go a chapter at a time.

Photoshop is really the best photo editing program out there. But it can be a bit daunting. There are a lot of features, more than the average user even needs. Which is why they created Photoshop Elements. You get a lot of the cool features that people commonly use in Photoshop, but for much cheaper...and it's very user friendly.
You don't specify what platform you are on, but no worries. Elements is compatible with both Mac and Win. Here's a link to the Windows version overview. I thought the same way about it when I got it a couple of years ago. It was like rocketship engineering. But, I bought Photoshop 7.0 Bible and it really made things alot easier to understand. http://www.good-tutorials.com/tutorials/photoshop/web-graphics/22/10/newest go here for tutorials. Anything new you have to practice at. Just do one or two a day and after awhile you really begin to understand how to put it together. Photoshop is one of the best, and provides more features than most.

This is probably one of the easiest, most functional FREE program around. There may be more powerful ones, and they might even be free, the Picasa is VERY easy to use and understand. Just about anything you would probably want to do is available.

Go pick up Photoshop for dummies or some 'tutorial' book that walks you through step by step. it's not as hard as you may think.
Learn it, it's the best thing out there.

If you want something that is simple and free, not fanciful and intuitive, you have already got it. Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint. Work on this for a start.

Gimp is pretty good and a lot easier to learn. Plus while you are using Gimp it will give you tips on how to use it better.
