Because its a formula that works. The callous blunt judge is the one everyone remembers, because he'll say the thing thats outrageous (but to some extent true) Likewise, when he finally says something positive, it carries a lot more weight.

I don't think its culture based, but things do sound sterner with a British accent (to American ears, anyway!)

Notice how So You Think You Can Dance has been pretty much following the same formula: Blunt male judge (Simon/Nigel) Wild female judge (Mary Murphy started out mean, and now she's more warm-fuzzy-crazy) and a guest judge or Randy.

And in America's Next Top Model, its not the British judge who was most feared and adored--it was Janice Dickinson! The British judge who's replaced her--Twiggy--unfortunately is bland by comparison, probably because she won't play the mean, callous bad guy.

I've wondered this also. Personally I think that fro the start of the show, the judges are told how to act to a certain degree.

I think it's valuable. If you always have nice judges faking compliments you don't get any real feedback.

Who's feedback is more worthy on American Idol? Is it Randy, Paula, or Simon? It's Simon, because he doesn't sugar coat it.
