Think about what you are saying in both your examples.
232 BC means "232 years before Christ" as opposed to "before Christ 232 years"
AD 1000 means "in the year of our Lord 1000" as opposed to "1000 in the year of our Lord"
It doesn't make as much sense to flip the order of the words around, now does it?

Didn't they stop uding that system. Most colleges and exams use b.c.e (before common era) and c.e (common era) now. They don't want anyone to be offended.
