Just before my milk comes down, I feel terribly anxious and very tearful and depressed, just awful! I call it the 'I want my Mommy' feeling, as it reminds me of when I was a kid and missed my Mom, like when I was at school! It makes me not want to breastfeed at times, I hate it. Does anyone else get this feeling, or am I alone in this?

I've heard of that before. It's not common, but it does happen. It will probably get better in the next few weeks, so don't give up on breastfeeding!!

How old is your baby? It may be post-partum depression. It's most likely just a reaction to the spike in oxytocin that you get when let-down occurs. Different women experience let-down in different ways, and this may be your way. I'm sure it will diminish over time, but if the depressed feeling gets overwhelming ask your doctor what you can do. PPD is very common, but less common and less intense in breastfeeding moms. These same hormones that are driving you nuts right now will eventually relax you and make you a more loving mommy. Congrats on the baby and giving him/her the very best start in life!

Sounds like a panic attack. When your milk comes in you get a "rush" feeling in your chest and your stomach tightens. These are the same physical reactions your body has to fear or panic. Your brain interprets these normal physical feelings as a sign that something is wrong. Each time you feed your baby, anticipate these physical reactions with almost a scientific approach. Welcome them. Then rate your emotional reaction on a piece of paper 1-10. Watch over a few days as your rating will drop. I promise you'll be over this soon.

I went through the same thing, except my mom came to visit me for a week to help with my daughter, so it wasn't really a "I want my mommy" feeling. I think it's just all the hormones getting to you. I still get all sappy and stuff and my daughter is getting ready to turn 6 months. Congrats on the baby! You'll be fine.

It's just your hormones in overdrive; it's an emotional time. Embrace your feelings, but switch your thinking about them to the positive.

It usd to right after I had the baby, about a month or so. Now, she's 4 months old, still BFing, and I'm cool with it.
