According to fashion lore, Coco Channel spent a summer in the South of France. When she returned she caused a sensation among the idle rich with her brown skin. Since she was THE trendsetter of her time, everyone else followed suit.

Although there are some of us who don't have to bother with such nonsense. Thank you, God!

Because it looks better than being pasty. The funny thing is that back in the day (I want to say 20s not sure though), being pale was in and if you had a tan it was not. Someone from the fashion industry came out with a model being nicely bronzed and that's when it started.

Now it's desired to be tan even though sun damage is being emphasized. Now the spray on tans are becoming more popular.

I don't go all out, but in the summer I like to relax in the pool and therefore get a nice tan... most everyone agrees I look better with a tan, so getting a tan is a good thing for me to do.

Most people are in school or work during the best sunlight hours, so when a person is sporting a deep tan, it is eye catching of course! They must be wealthy or have flexible hours to lay in the sun...we think.
It does look sexy and healthier than pale or white skin does. When we see pale skin, we automatically think of how we look when we have the flu or other illness which takes away our "rosey glow".
It says, Hey look at me! Celebrities sport nice tans since they live in warmer climates, have pools in their backyard and take exotic trips. People do imitate celebrities when they can...

I think people are fascinated with it because it is a quick way to change you looks. Our culture has shaped the idea that a tan=beauty. People want to be beautiful. Therefore a quick fix for them would be a tan.

I would venture to guess that at one time in the world a tan showed virility. It meant that the person was healthy enough to work out in the fields or hunting and because of that constant sun exposure was tan. Of course life expectancies were around 40 so no one would have known the implications that tans implied.

Personally I feel like I look healthier and more fit! I don't fake bake but I do try and spend a couple hours a day working or playing in the sun! You look better in shorts with golden brown legs vs ghosty legs!

I don't know either. People think it makes you look healthy but in reality, they couldn't be farther from the truth. It's one of the worst things you can do to your skin and will cause your skin to prematurely age later on in life.
