As someone else suggested: books! You can't go wrong with excellent children's literature. The best books can be read over and over again. Many toddlers and preschool children will ask you to read their favorites stories to them repeatedly. Look for books that rhyme or that have a rhythmic pattern. If you're not sure which titles to choose, I would recommend you visit your local library and ask the children's librarian for some suggestions. Also, please visit Jim Trelease's website. He is a big advocate for reading aloud to children and provides lots of evidence about why reading to children is so critical to their development. The sixth edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook will be available soon and is a great resource for parents and educators.

Blocks and other imagination starters are good. Evne some crayons, watercolors and a pack of construction paper alway go over well with kids. MR. Potato Head is an oldie but goodie. And we can't forget Playdough.
