Scientific Research is the process of determining the validity of an idea. Validity means that you will be working with accumulated data and deriving information and conclusions from it using accepted testing methods. If nothing can eventually be tested you are not doing scientific research.

Scientific Research can mean a lot of different things depending on what is being researched. But a couple of common themes can be found in all scientific research.

1. Research has to include as wide a range of data collection as is possible. And you have to select that range based on what you are studying. For example you would not limit yourself to Florida if you were studying volcanoes.

2. Time would be spent on trying to formulate testable hypotheses. They have to be testable so that eliminates any beliefs as a cause. Beliefs are not testable.

3. The research should be able to be done by any properly trained scientist. And as a member of a scientific community you would want to communicate with other scientists working in similar research, seeking their advice, criticism, and encouragement as you progress.

4. You work should be published after you have determined as much as you think you reasonably can. If not published, it might be delivered as a paper at a conference. But you must communicate and share.

5. Don't draw unwarrented conclusion no matter how much you want to draw them. If the data doesn't support the conclusion then your conclusion is faulty and will need to be revised to fit the facts. Elimination of data that does not support your conclusion is dishonest and unethical, and has gotten a few scientists in Asia fired from their jobs.
