All of the sudden, our toilet is not draining properly. Very slow. We have plunged but it has not helped. It flushes but then fills up and drains very slowly. Any suggestions? No idea what has happened. This is a faily new toiled and was functioning just fine 2 days ago.

You have something blocking it.

Try plunging some more. Use a good power plunger. It that fails try putting a quart of liquid plumber in it and let it set a couple hours.

Are you missing anything in the bathroom? A comb, toothbrush, makeup? There things get flushed and hang up in the U of the toilet itself. That would mean removing the toilet.

I really think from your description a real good plunger will work.

A few days ago my toilet started draining slow. When I flush, the toilet fills up, and then slowly drains. To get solid matter to go down I have to flush 3-5 times. I first tried a plunger, which did not work. I then tried a closet auger, which did not work. So, I disconnected the toilet and took it out. I tried the auger and made sure that the auger was getting all the way through the trap, and it was. There did not seem to be an obstruction in the toilet.

We experience this on occasion. The roots from the tree out by the street grow into the lines. How old is your house? Old lines were made with something called orange gorp, which is just compressed tar paper ( if you can believe that). You probably have some kind of clog in your main line. It should be visible some where at the front of your house and the cap should just come off, it's like an overflow. Locate that, uncap it, run water or flush toiler to see if it overflows. This can help you detect where the clog is. It can be rootered out. Some times the roof vent for the toilets also get clogged with leaves and debri. Check those as well to make sure thay have air flow.

Here is a step-by-step from eHow, with links to other sites/ads that may help. I'd nix the Liquid Plumber idea -- last time I looked, I thought it said something specifically about not using it in toilets, but I may be wrong (has been known to happen).

Also, you may want to check your roof vent pipe. We've had this problem with my mom where the vent was clogging (like putting your finger over the hole at the top of a straw). This site also mentions it:

The vent pipe can become clogged with the bodies of small animals or birds; birds build their nests on and in these pipes, and debris can collect around the connections to the fixtures that drain into the pipe. A clogged vent pipe creates a retarded flow that is often the cause of illusive flushing problems. Some of the symptoms of a clogged vent line are such things as gurgling sounds in bathroom fixtures when other fixtures are draining, a lazy flushing toilet, or a toilet that appears to be stopped up, but doesn't respond to plunging or the use of a snake. (Hmmmm -- sounds familiar!!)

Anyway, good luck.

Huh?

Many reasons/solutions:

Try to pour a large bucket of water forcefully.
Try a rotorouter.
May be a tree root has grown inside the drain that connects your line to the sewer. This is a big job to get rid off. This means digging in your side/front yards.
The vent pipe is blocked. Every house has one, to facilitate water drain into the sewage. Inspect. Clue: If other toilets in the house do the same thing, it is the vent pipe problem.

Other than that, throw you arms up in the air, and call a plummer. Take a second mortgage to pay his fees.

Something is lodged in either the tiolet gooseneck or your drain line. You will probably need to run a snake down it. If you don't have one, call rotorooter.

try pouring a bucket of water down it. the pressure should help move anything that is stuck to go on down the pipes.
