Children need contact and conversation with other people. Also, as a teacher, I think that TV inhibits a child's ability to self-regulate their behavior and bodies. The only way they can sit still is by being a zombie in front of the TV.
Being content and calming down are skills that babies have to develop and learn. By popping them in front of the TV everytime they cry, they are robbing children of the chance to learn those skills.
That should impress your friends, especially the "self regulate part".
BTW I let my children watch a little TV, but not until they were older and only in short amounts. I also don't use the TV as a pacifier. Those are my thoughts on the subject.

it does affect brain development and the fast paced of TV is beleived to contribute to Attention Deficet since kids learn to jump from thing to thing... (day cares are also criticised for the same reason)
also I will ad that too much TV is bad because it doesnt allow kids to be bored - kids need to learn how to be bored - some parents feel they need to have the kids entertained at all times and even have TV in the car - this is detrimental to the kids development because as adults they will not be able to deal with the "slow times" of real life. Kids need to learn its ok to be bored and how to deal with it on their own.
TV shows made for kids purposely jump from one thing to another because they want to keep the kids entertained so mom doesnt flip the channel - this means the shows can make the station more commercial revenue so its not about making a show to help the kids its about making a show they can sell to make more money...

watching tv under 2 is not advocated because this ia a crucial time of development mentally verbally and emotionally. It is thought that watching tv will take time away from parental interaction and delay some of development. You just need to have balance in watching tv or watch together as I do with my kids (both under2). This is a time for learning for kids they just need to be taught not sat in front of the tv for hours on end with no interaction from parents.

Personally, I think it's because thay get "addicted" to it. I have 4 kids of my own,and 3 step kids. You can tell that my step-kids mother let them watch TV a lot, because all they ever want to do is watch TV or play video games. My kids, on the other hand, hardly ever want to. They would rather be outside, or doing something constructive. This isn't a proffessional reason, just my opinion!

Well my son is almost 2 and unfortunatly i allowed him to watch tv well i didnt his daddy did. and he loves tv. but its a known fact that watching alot of tv when there young like that causes them to get ADHD. So now since my husband is allowing me to stay home with him more i limit his TV watching to maybe 1 movie a day like a cartoon movie or the baby einstein movies are good. But more than that is ridiculous. But now he plays more with toys and gets into more stuff which is how i like it.

Well, I'm kind of the edge for this one. TV is definetely not the best thing for a child under two, but it can't cause serious damage, can it? Anyways, what about development programs?

they say that it teaches them to have a short attention span. i don't know how true that is though. i just never put my daughter infront of the tv. i played alot of music for her though.
now she just watches learning stuff and strawberry shorcake.
