Well cared for, they can pretty easily live to be 7, in ideal environments they can reach 20-30, and the oldest goldfish ever was 43.

In the right conditions they can live for many years.
I used to keep goldfish and have had some live 10 or 12 years.
They were kept in a large, unheated tank with filters and plants etc. and I looked after them in much the same way as tropical fish.
Before I got the conditions right for them I was lucky if I kept them a few weeks.
Some goldfish were dumped in a pond in our local park years ago and they have done really well. Their numbers have remained about the same but they have bred successfully and seem healthy.

Depends on its size... from 6months to 8 years. The longest living goldfish was 8 years.
Take care of him well, clean the water regularly, don't overfeed --and give them lots of TLC to live a nice long fishy life.
My sis had a goldfish called 'Pepper' - about 3inches long who lived for 2years.. still miss him like crazy.. amazing how attached a whole family can get to a little goldfish..

I have a friend who has had a goldfish for 7 years. And she won it at some crappy fair booth, not even a pet shop. However, this fish is very territorial and eats all the other fish. Maybe that's why it lives so long, no competition.

A goldfish should live for at least 15-20 years, if it doesn't there is something badly wrong.

As a member of the coi family, I have been told they can live for many, many years. I can only testify to 4 years though. I think it just really depends on the fish and the conditions it live in, just like humans.
