They have a player search. You can do it by zip code or country, I think, and you can contact people through the mail system on the site.
I had a guy contact me about my game group recently this way, and he has been coming over regularly and having fun.
Another option would be to ask at you local game store (if you have one). They may know of game groups in the area.

Yollege has the right idea.
In addition, many gaming stores have demo areas and gaming groups that use them. Its a great way to try games out before buying them too. This is especially true if you live city that has a decent college too. I play lot's of board games, and i am not talking about jenga, cranium, monopoly, or any of those mainstream games.

Can you believe it--I actually have all those war strategy games: RISK (2 versions), Warhammer Fantasy, Axis and Allies, a lot of Star Wars wargames, Stratego, and chess. But 90% of the time I play those games alone. Whenever I do get people to play them, they only stay for like 10 minutes (30 at the most). It really sucks but I guess you'll just have to give somebody five bucks so they would play with you.

Oh man I wish you lived close to me -- I have the same problem. I love board games. When my relatives get together we'll play game after game until midnight! But that's only twice a year and it's not enough to satisfy my board game need.

I like board games too. I find that sometimes when friends are over and dringking they are sometimes more in to doing something unusual. Cranium, and truth or dare Jenga, are good ones to start with.Twister is always good for friends who have know each other for a bit. Just bring up the iead an see who is up for it.

To download for free Axis and Allies you can click here: http://bitly.com/1BDxBlf
it's the full version, avaiable for free! very fast to install
You can pick to be either the Allied powers of Britain, Russia, and America, or instead opt to play as the Axis powers of Germany and Japan. Either way, this is a worldwide conflict where you'll have to learn to play strategically across two fronts, no matter who you’re playing as.
You should definitely try it
