There is a lot communication in the media about life styles of rich people that promotes the needing of been rich.
Generally with wrong thoughts about happiness, because mostly assumed that happiness come with the richness... As one of the main mistakes...
On the other hand, money gives you freedom to do what you want and any given time and this is a must strong argument for people wanting to be rich. To accomplish your material desires at anytime...

Richness is of many kinds. some people want to be rich in health, some in wealth, some in behaviour, some in knowledge, in prizes,in friends, etc. what kind of richness are u stating about?
If it is in wealth then also comes many categories as some people wants to be rich to provide each and every luxury to family and thy self, some want to be rich to fulfil needs of poor people like giving free basic neccessities.
I know that this is more of a sort of technical answer but analysis is my interest factor. hope that you liked it.

Money doesn't assure happiness, but lack of money makes unhappiness more likely. So a certain amount of money definitely increases the likelihood of being happy.
Most people want to increase their wealth, but the more it increases, the less interest they have in increasing it further.
There are exceptions, people who just can't get enough money and power and self-aggrandizement. Such people should not serve as role models.

People want to be rich because if they were, they wouldn't have so many problems. They would be able to have enough food to live on, make sure they can afford their electricity and water bills, pay off their mortgage, be able to send their kids to college, be able to go on family vacations, etc.

insecurity they think they need possessions to make them whole.
greed is partly due to the governments brainwashing the people to consume more - since the government makes more money when you buy stuff and makes more money when you work more and pay more taxes they want you to buy lots which requires you to desire to be rich so you can fullfill your debt to them... being rich isnt real its a man made condition

I don't.. I just want to be comfortable- not have to worry about how much money I am spending and living check to check anymore. Being rich does not matter to me.

People wants to be rich because of they want to improve their life. When you are not affordable to get whatever you want, it is a prove that you are financially insecure.
