wash it first and let it soak up a lot of water. then take it out and drag it across a rough cloth. that should make it much softer and whiter.

put it in a bag with a bit of water and that might help. if not try peeling off the outer layer. the stuff inside will be just like new

Try soaking in lighter fluid. Don't leave in too long.
