Interestingly, there is no one hormone that directly antagonizes insulin. There are many hormones that increase glucose levels, cause gluconeogenesis, and increase glycogen production. The hormone that can be best described as a direct antagonist is glucagon, because it mainly works to raise glucose levels, and is also produced by the pancreas, but by alpha cells, and not beta cells which produce insulin. Other antagonists include hGH, cortisol, and epinephrine

The 100% correct answer is glucogon.

The Beta cells release Insulin(hormone) when there is high glucose levels in the body then insulin attacks muscles and liver which store glucose and convert it to glycogen.

Then Alpha cells release glucogon when there is low glucose levels in the body and then it targets liver and glycogen is broken down into glucose.

Therefore they are antangonistic in its action to insulin.

Glucagon is the easy answer. Epinephrine as well as cortisol can also mobilize glucose from glycogen.

Cortisol, is not synthesized or secreted by the liver. It is synthesized from pregnalone in the adrenal gland (which sits on top of the kidney) in response to ACTH which is released by the anterior pituitary gland.

yeah..........i think i have read something 'bout this in some health magazine.

it's CORTISOL........it is secreted by the liver because of its stimulation due to which excess of glucose is produced in ur body.

this usually happens when u r under severe depression or probably because of hormonal imbalance.

when u skip ur meals excess of CORTISOL is produced by liver and in order to produce glucose ...........proteins r stolen from the skin, muscle and tissue.

due to this the immune system is adversly affected and not only that it also affects the nuerons to a great extent.

so my friend if ur on a crash diet ...........stop it now!!!

the other effects seen are :abnormal fat deposition , dilution of the eyes ,saggy body ,and hypertension.

so exercise , eat and sleep enough everyday.

i wouldn't say antagonistic....

the beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin which decreases the levels of glucose in your blood.
the alpha cells produce glucagon which do the opposite; it increases the levels of glucose in your blood.

but as mentioned above, glucagon ain't the only one that results in an increase in glucose levels.
