I have massive migraines as well and the best thing to do is not to take anything if you can avoid taking it. sip some nice chamomile tea, get a warm and or cold cloth or compress and place it over your forehead. Just sit back in a quiet dark cool room and drift off to sleep. when you awaken your migraine should be gone or at least dulled a little. If that does not work try Ibuprofen or go see you doctor. Those other meds they will try to give you have so manu other side affects you'd be better off with the migraine. The best advise I can give you is to try the natural cures first and try to get more sleep. When you get the chance go see a chiropractor. I found out last month that the cervical spine can pinch nerves and cause migraines as well as other problems. Try to work with your body instead of medicating it. That is always the worst short cut because your body pays the price in the long run. take care of it now.

taking a medicine that stops the migraines isn't "band-aiding" the problem. it is *stopping* the problem. Sometimes what causes the migraines to happen is never found. Yes, some dietary items can make them worse. And, yes, mom, an allergy *can* bring on a migraine. One of the problems with specialists is that they only look for problems within their specialty. I've had migraines for over thirty years. Like your son, they would blindside me (literally, I get the aura) and I'd fall to the floor and vomit. No cause has ever been found. And believe me, I've had ever test that could be thought up in the past three decades. H***, I even found a voodoo practitioner and begged for help. Only way that helped was that the room was darkened. I'm on a migraine preventative now. FINALLY one that now works for me. Oddly, it didn't work several years ago when I first tried it. But it's given me a measure of my life back. I no longer have to wear sunglasses in the house because lights are too bright. Let the neurologist test him. But also take him to an allergist, it can't hurt. Be aware though that your son may have to learn how to adjust his life to this. It can be done. Good luck.

A good thing to do when you have a migraine is lay down in a dark, quiet room and relax. The less your brain is stimulated, the better you will feel. Also check with your doctor about taking Imitrex or another similar medicine for migraines. A migraine is caused by the expansion of the blood vessels in your brain (opposite of regular headache) and therefore makes you more sensitive to light, smells, sounds, etc.

Excedrin Migraine and the regular Excedrin are actually the exact same thing if you look at the active and inactive ingredients. Whichever one you choose, it's the best over-the-counter option for migraines (what my doctor recommended). It works well for me usually, but medication doesn't really help others.
sometimes a little caffeine can help, but sometimes it can make it worse.
Generally, the best thing you can do is relax and be in a dark and quiet place.

The best thing I've found to fight a migraine was to just let it happen. Sure medications can be a temporary relief but when you get them, just lay down and try to sleep it off.

My mom was ill for years and one day she went to this akumpucture expert. She did it 11 times and after that never had migrain again. Before, she would need silance and dark room to be in. Try it.
