I remember all my dreams very very well. I mean I remember each dream I've had. I remember them for years. But, nearly every night I dream about fish. Mainly I dream about whales. Sometimes I am only watching them, sometimes I'm in the water with them. I do not dream I am drownding, I'm not even really scared of them. They are not scary dreams, I just wonder why I dream about it...

In real life I HATE fish. I will not get in lakes or oceans. I don't eat fish (I am vegetarian). I actually have never even touched a fish. I was even given the opportunity to touch a whale and dolphin at sea world and would not do it. I also have a fear of undergroud aquariums and I don't even feel comfortable at pet stores looking at fish.

Seeing fish swimming in your dream means insights from your unconscious mind. Thus to catch a fish, represents insights which have been brought to the surface. The fish is also an ancient symbol of Christianity and Christian beliefs. Consider also the common phrases "like a cold fish", "fish out of water" or something that is "fishy" about a situation. It may also imply a slippery or elusive situation. Dreaming that you are Seeing or eating fish, symbolizes your beliefs, spirituality, luck, energy and nourishment. It is food for the soul. Seeing a dead fish means disappointment and loss of power/wealth. Dreaming of cooking fish indicates that you are incorporating your new realizations with your spiritual feelings and knowledge. Dreaming that you are cleaning fish, suggests that you are altering your emotional expression in a way that will be presentable to others. You are censoring yourself and not expressing how you completely feel.

Seeing a whale in your dream, represents your intuition and awareness. You are in tuned to your sense of spirituality. Alternatively, it indicates a relationship or business project that is too enormous to handle.

It is always important with dreams of this kind to know your life situation to be sure about an interpretation. The reason has to do with how a fixed amount of energy is getting used during the day. Some dream processes require time and considerable attention to cultivate.

The fish is an important interface or 'symbol' through which deeper layers of the vital forces in the "collective unconscious" surface and engage the ego-center of the individual consciousness. Hating fish is a little like hating serpents. Both are symbols of the collective unconscious.

The whale is an even greater symbol and is found in some of the greatest myths known to man. An example is Jonah and the whale. In this myth Jonah is swallowed by the whale for 3 days. He is then spat back up again. The 3 days is usually associated with death and resurrection or death/rebirth.

Many see the whale, fish, Leviathon, etc. as a profound symbol of the "mother" function. These dreams can suggest something about one's own mother but also may be pointing to the more primordial mother or matrix from which all of us emerge.

You may not be allowing yourself to descend more deeply into the source of your own personality. You may be floating along the surface when in fact you are being invited to investigate deeper forces or layers within yourself. You may not yet have dealt completely with the 'mother' function within yourself.

But it can be a very prolonged process once such images as 'fish', 'whales' and 'dolphins' transform. These are very primordial. Check to see if you are hiding some fear about letting go. Find out if you are trying to control and order everything too much. Examine your relationship with your mother or any 'mother substitute'. I know all this is touchy and no one ever said it was easy. But there may be forces in you that your system wants to wake up and integrate. This makes you stronger and more independent in the end.

The 'fish' is also a very, very primal symbol of the Self. The Self has a conscious and unconscious dimension. It cannot be identitifed with the partial, narrow and often controlling nature of ego-consciousness. It is huge and is often also associated with the Eyes of the fish. So it is both Eyes and Belly, or Light and Dark. The light is born out of the dark. The darkness in the belly of the whale was called the "nigredo". In Egypt this was the "blackness" associated with Isis and Osiris. Black was ultimately associated with wisdom. The wisdom was not only the light born from the black. Rather wisdom is the whole cycle. This fits well with the Chinese system of yang and yin which together compose the Tao, the ocean that the 'fish', the 'whale', the 'dolphin' and, of course, the ocean that you yourself are swimming in. This is not the physical ocean per se. It is that strange ocean called the collective unconscious by some people. For the Egyptians it was the Lake of Life. It was also the Netherworld presided over by the Great Osiris. It went by other names also, and the way one entered that world was through the Eye of Horus.

Anyway, I mention these things just in case they stir up the water a little. Some fear of these creatures is normal. But there is no reason to hate fish, whales and dolphins. It is something else you are hating that for the moment you are projecting onto these creatures which appear as emotionally charged and memorable symbols in your dreams. Hate can be a mask for fear so you have to be careful of that word HATE. Find out what else you are hating and why. Find out if you hate change. Find out if you hate certain emotions. Find out how you feel about death on various levels.

Keep looking at the fish. Don't evade them. Explore, explore. Your dreams might change.

Let me analyze this dream for you. (and thank you for information about your feelings toward fish)

fish = sea animals that you cannot touch
Whale = huge fish that you don't see that often

Looks like your dream is total opposite from reality. You don't like fish and yet you dream about fish, and a big one - Whale.

Basically, this dream is about how you view the world. There are opportunities out there for your to explore, and yet you tend to keep it in your own world. You do not want to discover new thing not because you hate fish, but because deep down you do not feel the need to do it. Dreaming a big whale is telling you that the world is waiting for you discover. You have to open your heart and your mind to see what is out there.

The other meaning of fish = freedom. You probably like to be free in a way that most fish do in the big ocean. And yet you probably feel locked in your own world. That is why you are dreaming of fish, a big whale. Fish only symbolizes how you view the world and it reflects your personality in dream.

If I am not mistaken, you are not a sociable person. You are a quite person.

I could be wrong, but this is how I see from your dream

You've probably heard somewhere that whales are the biggest creatures on earth. You're using whales as a symbol for something in your life that you want to grow and mature, e.g., a personality trait, job status, a relationship, etc.

You want to improve this by all means necessary - given by the fact that you encounter something you hate and have no problems being beside fish in your dream.

Hi Jen,
The whales & fish are symbolic. These dreams are about you. Being in the water with whales may indicate that you feel comfortable with "deep things", or that you are able to "digest" massive quantities of "deep things" that would choke others. You are not a shallow person. Hope this helps!

It's probably the same reason I dream about tornadoes all of the time. I have never been in one, or even seen one for that matter. I think there is a part of my brain that is curious (and a little scared) about the unknown. I think dreams are the brains way of sorting through things it is unclear about while you are not busy thinking about other things.

Everything in your dream is a part of you. It is what you're feeling, thinking, and your fears. Your dream is telling you something. Since you do not dream that you are in any danger or drowning, you should not fear water or fish at all.

Listen to your dreams.
