If you start with homo and hetero as opposites and than say gay and lesbian are subsets of homo... wouldnt the opposite of gay be lesbian??

I always like the idea of the Kinsey scale, but could never figure out what each end ment. I think I need a three dimensional model for this effort.

Idealistically, labels should not be a fact of life. The color comparison is interesting. Similar in scope to this issue. Black on one end and white on the other. All shades of adsorption in between. Light is used as the "sorting" mechanism. Wonder what that would be in this situtation.

No. Two items of the same subset are not usually opposites. Blue, green and yellow are in the subset of colors. But blue and green are not opposites.

The opposite of gay would be straight, or if you intended for gay to mean just the male homosexua, then the opposite is the male heterosexual.

Hehe. It's funny I came across this question, because I used to tell my friends to their disbelief that the opposite of gay was lesbian. I found on a personal social basis I can relate to straight women or even men, but I have a hard time relating to lesbians. I think if I had to plot out the spectrum it would go gay man - straight woman - straight man - lesbian. But that's just me.

In a climate where prejudice continues; where people have been executed or imprisoned for their sexuality or others are fighting for equal rights, is it constructive to be talking about sexual orientations in opposition?

I know that this is just a light-hearted question and, of itself is in no way controversial...perhaps I'm being too sensitive? After all, what is the opposite of bisexual?

Why does it matter? people are people, no matter if they are hetrosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transgendred(sp), or any other variation of sexual oreintation(sp). I guess if you really made it a point to put people in lables, Hetrosexual would be the opposite of Homosexual.

Straight.

The proper balance is heterosexual and homosexual (which would take in your gay/lesbian contingent)
