It depends completely on what type of fish you have. Some fish it's almost impossible to tell. Others can be determined by special markings or size. Some tropical fish are brighter if they are males, others are more pale.
In the case of livebearers (i'm going to go more in depth with these, because they are more common fish and since you haven't said what ones you have, it might be likely that you have one of these) there is a fin on them that is long and held close to their body if they are a male, while if they are a female it is wider and fans out. Livebearers include mollies, guppies, platies, and swordtails. With guppies the males are also usually slightly smaller with brighter fins (at least the pet store ones are, many breeders have come up with females that are just as pretty). With swordtails the males have a longer part that sticks out from their tail (aka a sword lol).
With bettas the males are generally the larger, longer finned ones with brighter colours.

In most species the plain and simple are females, the flashy ones are males. There's a reason for that linked to mating...but that's a different story or better said answer to a different question.

You can determine if is a male by there long tail and also they grow much bigger than females. And females have short tails and are much smaller than males. Also go to wal-mart and on there jar it says if they are male or female

depends on the species you are looking at. In some cases, the male will be larger or more colorful, while in others, its just the opposite.

different kinds of fish have different characteristics that allow you to tell the sex of the fish. here's a good website that gives you things to look for in several different tropical and freshwater species of fish.
