The two are probably unrelated. But please *don't* let him sleep on his stomach--you are *doubling* his risk of dying of SIDS *and* increasing his risk of suffocation as well.

Whats the relation of a swollen eyelids to letting your baby sleep on his stomach? I think there is none. As soon as the infant is born his eyes were treated with antiviral or antibacterial solution. Return to your pediatrician and have your baby examined. I am a midwife and has worked in the nursery with 100 to 150 babies. (a govt maternity hospital) we sometime let babies sleep on their stomach if the umbilical cord has already fallen off. Its has nothing to do with SIDS

I have no idea why his eyelids were swollen but letting him sleep on his stomach was the worst thing you could have done for him. Sleeping on there stomach is the big cause of S.I.D.S. . They tell you that in the hospital before you leave with your baby. All babies should be put to sleep on there backs until they are able to roll from front to back and back to front on there own.

In response to atticcat. I don't know what hospital she worked in that says a baby sleeping on its tummy has nothing to do with sids. well I thank god I didnt have my baby there.

His swollen eye lids have nothing to do with him sleeping on his stomach. It's the begginings of a cold or he just didn't get his nap out.

First of all, the Academy of Pediatrics recommends no baby sleep on their tummy. It has been proven to increase the incidence of SIDS(sudden infant death syndrome). so you should always lay your baby on its back to sleep. Secondly his eyelids were probably swollen because his body is quite ready to get rid of all excess fluid and when he laid on his tummy the fluid shifted and was what you would call dependent edema. in other words the swelling went with gravity. You may want to ask your doctor if swelling continues to be an issue for him. But please DO NOT lay him on his tummy unless you or someone else are right with him.

Your fortunate. My 10 month previous takes 2 naps an afternoon, when we get domicile from artwork, he eats supper, takes his bathtub and is waiting for mattress by skill of seven:30, he sleeps till about 5:30 or 6:00. He in basic terms all started snoozing all nighttime about 2 months in the past. Your toddler sounds positive.

First, it is my firm belief, as well as my children's doctor, that the reason that there is the connection between SIDS and tummy sleeping is because for years they (doctors and Academy of Pediatrics) told us to put babies to sleep on their tummies to prevent choking. Then they did a study and since most babies were sleeping on their tummies most SIDS deaths occurred in babies sleeping on their tummies. (Gee, I wonder why?) My son is 8 and I was told to put him to sleep on his side to prevent SIDS. NOTHING that we know of can prevent SIDS, because we do NOT know what causes SIDS. My son slept on his stomach as much as he did on his side or back. When was it that he choked and quit preathing? On his back!! My 8 month old daughter sleeps on her stomach. I started her out on her back and she never slept very well or very long. My mother put her on her tummy and she slept so well that we switched to tummy sleeping.

NOW, about your question regarding you son's eyes. My daughter's eyes were swollen as well. The cause was a clogged tearduct, which is very common in newborns. She was prescribed drops for her eye and I put a warm washcloth on her eye several times throughout the day and would also gently rub the corner of her eye several times a day. If you do rub your baby's eye, be sure to rub toward nose and upward. You are trying to move the clog up and out. I would definitely suggest taking your son to his doctor to make sure it is not an infection. If it is you will need antibiotics.

Good luck and don't be intimidated by those who would choose to judge you based on assumptions.

first~newborns should not lie on their stomach due to the increased risk of SIDS. as for the swollen eyelids that could be due to fluids going to the lowest parts of the body(the part closest to the mattress).

First, I am not going to critisize you for letting your baby sleep on his belly. All 4 of my boys did, and they are just fine. You gotta do what you gotta do to get some sleep yourself!
His eyelids swelling could just be from sleeping on them, or allergies. If you are really concerned,or it happens all the time, maybe you should have him checked by his doc. Good luck!

It may be an infection. Talk to your doctor. Also, put your son on his back to sleep. It will go by fast, one day your baby will roll over on his own.
