Plenty over the years, but check out John Singer Sargent. He's old school (late 1800s), but put a lot of life in his paintings....

but the woman with a beard is very good.

i was going to say chuck close as well. he is the artist who did the huge paintings, way larger than life, that from up close often look pixelated. or sometimes he used an airbrush so its extraordinarily detailed (think individual eyebrow hairs, pores).
