Thats what most people do, but if you got a big belly ache, hungry, thirsty, hot or a messy nappy, no amount of strokes and whispering is going to stop an unhappy baby from crying.

My son NEVER liked to be swaddled. In the hospital he actually (honest) kicked out of the blanket & ended up laying in the bassinet with nothing but a diaper on & he loved it. I did whisper in his ear & still do though to calm him...

Knew that, and works great. Start loud with the hush and gradually get softer when the crying gets less and less.

Babies that are swaddled tend to cry less than ones that aren't, apparently. All the midwives advised me to do this with both of mine. It seemed to work.
