I've noticed that cartoons often only have one parent. Often in movies several characters are amalgamated (combined) to conserve time. Or a parent is killed for dramatic effect.

Here's a quick list of some animated features - you can see that mothers and fathers are both equally eliminated.

Beauty and the Beast: Single father.
Bambi: mother/father mother killed by hunter.
Pinocchio: father: Geppetto has no wife
Dumbo: mother
Lion King: mother/father: father killed
Chicken Little: father no mother
Toy Story: mother no father
Finding Nemo: father/mother mother killed
Iron Giant: mother no father
Incredibles: mother and father

In my opinion the Incredibles has more depth because the family dynamic is there. It is a really complex film!

Well, the Simpsons have a Mom.
Tom and Jerry don´t have one, but that´s "normal" with grown-up cats and mice.
Donald Duck has an uncle. Micky has his Daisy.
I think, it´s because most comic characters are adults. So in an adult life, the own family and friends are the ones you see most often. Also drawing old wrinkly comics is much more work than drawing a young face :-)

Well, most animes have mum. If there isn't, then they usually do a good job of telling the tragic story about "what happened to mum".

So, I don't know what cartoons you're referring to (I don't watch American cartoons; maybe you're talking about those?).

The mom would have stood in te way of the adventures that the main character(s) would have.

Which ones are you talking about?

Often it is to set up the hero or heroinne to go out and search for something "better" of for something that is missing from their life.
