My husband and I are desperately looking for ways to get out of debt. We've decided to start a basic lawn care service, but do not know where or how to start? We are in the state of Mississippi. Any information would help.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start Your Own Lawn Care Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* Start & Run A Landscaping Business by Joel LaRusic
* How to Start a Home-Based Landscaping Business, 4th by Owen Dell
* Lawn Care & Gardening: A Down-To-Earth Guide to the Business by Mickey Willis

MS Specific:
* How to Start a Business in Mississippi by Entrepreneur Press
* Smartstart Your Mississippi Business by Oasis Press

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Don't limit yourself to lawncare. You can achieve better results and faster cashflow by offering a wider variety of services that are low cost.
Painting, tree/bush/shrub trimming, handyman services, house cleaning etc......

Create a flyer that advertises all the services you wish to provide. Select the neighborhoods that can 1. Afford your services and 2. Use your services and get out there and put those flyers out!
