I haven't had any bad experiences buying (or selling, except for one). The main things you need to look out for -
1 - Check the seller's feedback rating (the number next to their name shows how many unique feedback comments they have) and read the comments. If there are more than one or two negative in the past 6 months (depending on how big of a seller they are), then you probably don't want to buy from them.
2 - Check out the seller's Member Profile to see how long they have been a member of eBay (the profile is on the same page as the feedback, on the right hand side). Although you want to give new sellers the benefit of the doubt, if they only signed up less than a month ago and haven't sold to anyone else, I'd probably think twice about buying from them.
3 - READ THE FINE PRINT!! Many eBay newbies do not read the shipping charges and are taken aback at how high they can be. Just like in any other store, "if it's too good, it probably is" - really be aware of those 1-cent specials (usually high shipping). Remember, when you make a bid on eBay, you are saying that you are going to purchase the item - it is a binding contract.
You might want to check out the "new to eBay section" on the website (link below) for more tips. Happy Shopping!

Yes it is if you know how to gauge the seller's performance first. I've been buying stuff on ebay for the last six years and have never had a problem. Plus I'm an ebay seller with 2,188 positive feedback. I'm very dedicated to giving 100% service.
What you need to look at first before buying the item, is to look at how much feedback the seller has and what percentage it is. If there are like one or two negatives out of over 2,000 transactions, then that is trustworthy. If a seller has had several negatives in only about 100 feedback, then that is not good. Plus read the feedback the neutrals and negatives to get a feeling of what type of person they are. If the seller replies to the negative with an angry, rude, put down remark, then that is not the type of person you want to deal with. If the seller replies with neutral, just the facts, type of response, then that is good. I mean it is a matter of common sense and there is information about the seller to help you determine if it is trust worthy. Also be willing to spend a few more dollars from a seller that has a much better reputation.
As long as you have this kind of shopping behavior, then nothing can go wrong unless the USPS loses your package on the way which can happen. Hey life is not perfect.

I've purchased many times on Ebay and never had a problem, however a good friend got scammed a while back. She didn't really do her homework aboutthe seller though. You should look to see that the seller of the product is what Ebay calls a "verified seller", and check out the feedback statements. See what other people's experience with the seller was. Also, if they take paypal payments I think thats a safer way to pay and that also requires the seller to be verified...
Some sellers actually have Ebay stores online, selling a ton of merchandise- I would be inclined to buy from these folks...its their business.
As with everything- there is always a chance of getting ripped off but Ebay does a good job and I think for the most part if you investigate before you bid, you'll have a good experience!!

I was ripped off once, but have made several hundred purchases. Pay attention to any patterns you see in the feedback that are negative, My gut said not to try the seller and I did anyways.

No bad experiences personally. You just have to make sure to look at the seller's feedback and see how other people have liked them.
