We live in a very consumeristic society where we are constantly encouraged to buy new things and dispose of our old stuff. All of this waste is so bad for the environment. Does anyone out there still refurbish or barter? Any tips on creative ways to reuse old stuff?

It's not about what you have, it is all about what you can save. One day you will open up your eyes & retirement will be stareing you right in the face, will you be prepared? You may think that you are too young to even think of such a thing, but into everyone's life some rain must fall. You need to be prepared & not so dependent on others. Yes, people need to be thrifty, unless you have a disposable income. Our wages & salaries aren't increasing, but the cost of living is. Grocery prices keep increasing, gas prices, interest rates are at an all time high, taxes keep going up on homes, yet our wages stay the same. This is due to the poor state of the economy, as our President is trying to turn this into a third world country, where the poor will need to work 2-3 jobs to make ends meet, and the only people to benefit will be the rich that he gives breaks to. They get richer, as the poor get poorer, it is not fair. Our trade policies are not fair. He wants people to work for what they work for in other countries which is what I call currency manipulation. We need a president that will work for working people, raise living standards, expand freedom, strengthen human rights, & lift people up instead of shoving them down! How he failed the Hurricane Katrina victims shows his misplaced priorities & broken promisesl. When he was asked a while ago, when our troops would start coming home from Iraq, a while ago, his response was that it will be up to the next president! We can't wait that long, to set a new course for our country!, Yes, be thrifty. It is not what you have, it is what you can save, cause everybody wants your money, so hang onto it!

there are tons of ways to do this, local flee markets, sites like e-bay. as for reusing old stuff, pretty much anything in your house can be turned into something decorative, you just have to be a bit creative, and use your imagination. try buying one of those better homes and garden magazines there always giving ideas on what to do with your used stuff.

Yes they do especially in impoverished countries where the currency rate is so bad that money doesn't have meaning.

I've been trading/bartering old things (& new) on http://www.caretotrade.com. It's a free site that lets you trade, buy & sell items & services with others. Give it a try.
