yes it is a habit and most of the times it is distracting to the person your talking to. a little bit is ok but you should try to modify it if you have this problem

Yes. The same method is exaggerated on stageplay productions to ensure that the lines are driven directly to the audience. By combining both the physical and emotional tones of our speech, it makes it a lot simpler for the human mind to comprehend what another person is saying. A lot of anthropologists feel that the hand motions are instinctual from millenia of not having formed a coherent language until just recently (recently being 8000 years ago).

The word for "talking with your hands" is gesticulating, or gesturing. Yeah it helps get your point across, because it adds a visual impact to the verbal part of communication. Then again, if you were to sing everything you were saying, people would remember more of it. If you were to dance at the same time, or flash different colours, or smell of different scents, then you would get the point across and it would stick in their heads. Appealing to the five senses helps, and visual and aural are just the main two for communication.

People who talk with their hands learn it when they're very young. Their parents probably talked with their hands, so before they learned to talk, they saw these expressions and learned them fast! Its much faster to learn visual expressions than verbal ones. So its not a habit, but more like a natural reaction. Its not "thinking" with their hands persay, cause they only do it when theyre talking or expressing themselves to other people. If they 'thought with their hands' then they'd do it all the time whenever they think!

I think so. It makes you appear more excited, more energetic, and it makes you seems like you have a better understanding of what you're saying. Of course it can be taken too far but it looks strange to see a person making a point with their hands sitting at their sides.

While you're beating the tar out of them, Yes. Seriously though sometimes you have to gesticulate with your hands to make someone see the point of what you're trying to say.

It only helps the get the point across in that it may cause the listener(s) to stay focused on what you are saying. Being animated may prevent lack of attention.

It may not help explain what you're saying but I think it helps with conveying the energy that's behind what you're saying.

Not at all, uless you know sign language, don't bother trying to tell stories with your hands, it makes it even more confusing.
waving hi and goodbye and giving the finger are easy to understand but some are just misunderstood.
