Our months were named based on the roman calendar. Back in ancient times, september really was the seventh month of the year. There were fewer months then too. We updated the time system but kept some of the old names, which is why the number based months are out of sync.
Another interesting factoid about the Roman connection: July and August are named after the Roman Emperors Julius Caesar, and Augustus Caesar.

yes, I believe that the year had only 10 months and Jan and Feb were added (or maybe that was July and August)...
