What is the actual difference between DSL and BroadBand and what is the different equipment each needs to be used?

Okay, from the answers so far broadband is just a term for a high speed connection and can come in the form of DSL or Cable.
A friend of mine next door is getting broadband.. Here is the kicker though from the information I have receivced so far. In my area we can not get Cable nor DSL so how can my neighbor get broadband? Can this be done through some form of a satelitte dish?

DSL actually is a form of broadband.Do you mean DSL and Cable? If so, DSL is carried by the normal telephone line. Its speeds are dependant on your location relative to the central hub. Depending on where you live, most towns have pretty decent DSL infrastucture these days and speed should be decent. Cable is, well, carried over the traditional TV cable lines and can be very fast. The variable with cable is the greater the number of people in your neighborhood using cable, the slower your connection will be. Again, modern infrastructure makes for decent speeds. The modem? They are essentally the same (although not interchangeable).

How to decide? Try and ask some of your neighbors what they are using and see if they can provide feedback on speed, reliability etc. And by all means - take price into consideration.

DSL runs through your phone lines, broadband runs through your cable. They both run on modems. Different kinds though. I like my DSL, I am having better luck with it than I did with my broadband. Some people feel the opposite. I think broadband is cheaper too.
