Okay some one asks you how are you? And your feet hurt your back is stiff, you had fight with a significant other, your dog got sick and dirtied up the whole house which really ticked you off. Would you tell some one that or would you just say fine. Most people just ask how you are as a courtesy they really don't want the details, so fine works.

Because I believe most people don't really want to know how I am doing. I believe if I told them the good parts they would think I was bragging and if I told them the bad parts they would think I was complaining, so I always say fine and how are you, then I let them talk.

Well, i dont say fine - i just say i'm good how about you? But the reason alot of people say fine or good, etc. is because we know people are asking us how we are just to be nice. i mean no one wants to stand there and listen to us go through every little thing thats wrong with us! You wouldnt want to stand there and listen to someone go through all of their ailments would you?

Because we know that to most people that is just a polite question. They don't really want to know how you are. So, the polite answer is, "fine."

" I am SOO glad you asked, you see, it's been such a hard week, Mother hasn't been quite herself lately and I've had to watch the Hotel. The guests have started to complain and I AM ONLY ONE PERSON AND CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH. There, I do feel better for your asking. PHEW! Thank You

Yeah, most people would say "fine" without even thinking about it....almost like a reflex.
When they do think about it, you get the responses you see here so far. LOL!

Because they are just being polite. No one wants to hear the answer, and not many except seniors want to share all their issues.

I say I''m making it but that's not what you want to know.We say it because the person asking doesn't really want to know , it's just a greeting.

i ussually say i'm good or I'm alright thank you but most say fine i think maybe it was used since the old days and it just stuck

For the most part it is just a greeting. They don't really want to hear about your troubles.
