Last year I tried to load Microsoft Office 2000 on my computer, my cd-rom haven'at worked every since. I tried every thing to get it to work.

CD's can't mess up a drive, unless they were cracked to being with, and were destroyed inside the drive once it started to spin it and read it.
you'd know if that happened.

otherwise, it could simply just have died. they die. it happens.

have you tried:
checking the cables inside the tower?
reloading the system software and drivers for the drive?
using canned air inside the drive, with the tray open, in case of a particle of dirt/dust on the eye?
