I think first one has to look at the difference between ego and egotism. An ego is a good thing. I positive self image is a driving force toward success and achievement. But there are those who get a little carried away.

Narcissus, in mythology, way his own undoing. His egotism so grand he fell in love with himself, and, thus, lost all opportunity for true love and happiness.

The moral is balance. Love yourself, but maybe not to the point of narcissism.

People should get over themselves. I have a relative who constantly says "I love me!" It gets a bit irritating after a while.
