I read this book in college for a class. I did not find it as unbearable as some of the other books we were studying, but it was not a favorite either. It's been five or six years now, but essentially it is about how one man has trouble having any meaningful relationships with women because he has issues with his mother. I do remember him ending up alone and miserable. If its read for pleasure, it might be more enjoyable as opposed to reading it in order to take tests and write essays.

It is my favourite book by D.H Lawrence & an excellent [older]movie (although greatly condensed). I may like it more than some people however since Imy parents were both miners.
"Set near the Nottinghamshire coalfields, where his father was a miner, this autobiographical novel explores Paul Morel's relationship with his mother and his passion for two other women. It is a fatal conflict of love and possessiveness."
You really need to read it.

It's a good book. It's not as engaging as I thought it would be, to be perfectly honest. I remember being slightly bored with it at times as D.H. Lawrence gets really involved with descriptions.
It's about a young man who was brought up in a coal-mining town and is adored by his mother. It takes us through his teen years- his first job, first love and illness and an affair with a married woman, etc.

I found it pretty dry. It's very much an Oedipal drama, where a man's overly tight relationship with his mother causes him to screw up two relationships with women, one who apparently loves him and one who, though married, wants a more physical relationship. Eventually the mother dies, and the protagonist goes off alone, even though one of the women he theoretically loves is still there, waiting for him.
