If it is against the law to even possess an automatic weapon, why is it legal for the police to carry them openly around the airport? Isnt it against the law?

I know it is right for them to do so. I do not argue that, I ask what law allows the police to carry automatic weapons, there must have been a law passed?

Its legal because the terrorism Act entitles trained firearms officers to carry guns, we need them at airports because sometimes crazy people with crazy views of the world think they can do what they like, and these people need to be stopped by lethal force!

The Heckler & Koch MP5 machine guns carried by officers at Airports can be set to single, triple, or automatic fire.

The laws surrounding use of weapons for police officers is very thorough and in no account would any of them use the weapon on full auto it is A) Innacurate & B) Dangerous to bystanders and would lead to instant arrest and dismissal of the officer.

Automatic fire is only used for suppressing fire in the field by Infantry, Hollywood blockbusters or Yardie drive-bys.

Seems to be very dangerous to arm the police with automatic weapons, these are the personnel weapon of mass destruction. I think that the safety of airports is not enhanced by this type of policing. What are they going to do if terrorists turn up machine gun everybody, these are the most inaccurate type of gun even a hand gun is more accurate.

Its high time British Police Officers were issued with Guns on a regular basis whilst out on duty. Just as police officers in other countries do.

Anyone who makes complaint about our Police Officers carrying such weapons - as Tim T - has some uterior motive for having them removed. May be he is a terrorist?

It is against the law for the PUBLIC to carry an automatic weapon, but it doesn't apply to people who have to carry them as part of their duties. The army also have automatic weapons, and they have carried them in the streets of Ireland

The last time I was in London the terminal was being patrolled by British soldiers carrying selective fire military issue weapons. Both at Gatwick and Heathrow.

Each Country establishes what is the norm for them in terms of civil protection against enemies both domestic and foreign.

Before it is over, we all will live in another police state where civil liberties are almost nonexistent.

Who said it had to be an automatic weapon? Law enforcement officials are allowed to carry arms.

They can carry them.
I mean lets face it shouting "Stop or I'll shout stop again!" does not have the same effect on your average extremist loony as pointing a weapon at them and telling them to put the rucksack down.

I am being flippant but not if you understand.

I know that they have special powers. In a way they are almost part of the military when operating at an airport.
