I just wanted to make a quick note of clarification: Be aware that the term "nation" is not interchangable with "state" in political science terminology.
A post above is very correct in highlighting the fact that the U.S. is a state and not a nation; more specifically, it is a "multi-nation state." "Multi-state nations" also exist (one includes the nation of Israel pre-1948 [perhaps even today]). There is also the "nation-state" (for which Japan is a decent example: one state composed of a fairly homogenous people group). Also, there is the "non-state nation" (which would include most of the American Indian nations within the U.S.).
All in all, when you talk about "state," think "government;" and when you talk about "nation," think "people group."

A nation is a group of people defined by a common cultural heritage they may or may not be independent as a state. (example of non-independent nations = Kurdistan, Chechnya, or the Choctaw Nation).
It is also interesting to note that United States is not one nation, since it has multiple Indian nations within it.
The independence of a nation can be also be presented in a form of a state, but does not define the general characteristics of a state (France is a good example)
