What are they supposed to be able to do that should induce fear?

Gee Katie Bug, I'm afraid of unfounded criticism. So you're not only an "@ss" and a hypocrite! Have a nice day Ms. Sanctimonious.

Okay, put it this way. There's a reason those ghost movies do so well; because stuff like that can and does happen (maybe not to the extent we see in the movies, but it does happen. Check out Disovery Channel's Haunting.)
It's the sense of knowing damn well you should be alone but for some reason your sixth sense, your radar that lights up whenever you sense something that isn't quite right (ladies, you know the sense, it tells you if a guy ain't quite right or not and whether or not to run for it.) is saying you're being watched.
It's fear of death because Heaven is all good and well, but that ain't all there is to it.
It's also fear of the unknown, since the spiritual world is something we may never truely understand.
It's the feeling that you get when some intruder has violated your private space somehow and you can't identify that person.
It's the feeling that comes when you know something is going on, something that shouldn't be going on, like the soldiers who are seen on Drummond Hill Cemetary, located in Niagra Falls, Ontario, wearing the uniform of the Royal Scots, from the Battle of Lundy's Lane in July of 1814. Or a battle cry of "Faugh a ballagh!" (an old Irish war chant roughly translated to "Clear the way!") heard on the fields of Antietam, located near Sharpsburg, Maryland, USA, said to have been one of the last battle cries of the Irish Regement that fought in that area during the Civil War.
Mostly though, it's fear of the unknown and not understood.
Plus, ghosts, they can be mighty cold buggers! Hellava wake-up call when one decides to pop by.

I have never had a ghost to say boo but have had a spirit try to enter me an it was not a pleasurable experience at all. I had no control over my body or my mind. Regardless to say I couldn't even speak! If there hadn't been someone with me that knew what to do I am not sure what would have happened. I am not sure that I even want to think about what would have happened. It is not something that you want to poke fun at. You may just think of it as a joke but it is no laughing matter.

I think the reason that people are afraid of ghosts is because there have been so many movies and stories about ghosts coming back from the grave to terrorize and kill. It's crazy, but that's what makes money for the movie and tv producers.

People believe in different kinds of ghosts. There are the kind that are like Casper and people look down their nose at you for being afarid of. Then there are the kind like in the movie Ghost that peolpe think need help and want to help them so they can rest in peace. Then there are the ghosts that rattle chains in the attic fo old houses and slide chairs across the kitchen floors and stuff like that. People are afarid of all kinds of different things and you shouldn't be such an @ss to peole that are afarid of different things.

They can do more than just "pass through you". Are you saying the thought of a free floating, disembodied, possibly evil entity DOESN'T scare you? Are you just pretending to be brave?
