There's a lot of factors in that question. For some things, its easier for women, like getting child custody in most areas, getting help especially from government agenices, etc. and in cases of say domestic violence. I have known guys that were with girls that would mess them up and the police almost made them feel ashamed, same thing with custody, although I've started seeing things swing in the opposite direction, and getting help seems to be evening out, although there is still more help for single women with children than men.
On the other hand, men get better paying jobs, have more opportunities to move up, get cut more slack at the job for family matters, etc. It's a fact that the average man makes more money at the same job than the average woman. They are still considered "breadwinners" when now there are quite a few women who are the heads of household. When a woman stays home with her sick children, she can get fired... I know I have before... or written up or MAY not even get HIRED while a man, in a lot of cases, gets looked upon like the hero-- taking care of his family-- or with pity-- his "woman" isn't capable of taking care of things so he has to.
So it really depends on what part of life you're talking about, because the "rules of thumb" seem to be like a swinging door: in one case it swings for the women. IN another, it swings in favor of men.

Life is a whole series of ups and downs and both men and women go through that. We cannot really say that life is easier for one gender because of certain facts of life but that is just the way it goes. We all have to make the most of our lives, no matter who we are so I believe life is equally hard on some parts and easy on others on both genders. :)

Life is easier for men. By virtue of their gender, they make more money, they don't have menstrual cramps, they don't have to worry endlessly about their weight/hair/clothes/makeup, and no one thinks they'll never be president, because they're a girl.
Of course, as a woman in engineering, I got a larger scholarship to college, and I'll almost definitely have an easier time getting into law school, so it's not all bad.

Neither, really.
However, in some cultures, men clearly get to run things, and women have little-to-no say in important matters regarding their own lives.
And, even in cultures where women and men are supposedly equal, there is a certain subtle (sometimes not-so-subtle) assumption of power and privilege about being a male ('though the men usually don't perceive it, in large part because they figure that they're at women's mercy when they want sex, or they assume that women get picked for jobs solely because of affirmative action or suchlike, or they're angry that women seem to get to call the shots in matters of divorce, child custody, and whether or not to abort, or they resent that women seem to get a choice, after marriage, as to whether or not they'll continue to work for a wage, etc., etc.).

Women, oh the things i have gotten away with. I once was speeding ran a stop sign and had no proof of insurance. The officer let me go with a verbal warning. Another time i was speeding ( ladies this worked) and i told the officer my high heel got caught on the pedal. He just muttered something about having not heard that one b4 and off I went. Show me a man that has gotten away with that. I don't care how good looking he is. It just doesn't happen!
