... and would you recognize it when you found it?

Identity seems to be both discovered and created. People discover themselves. They also create (and recreate) themselves.

There are certain core personality traits that seem stable about each person, but our motivations, dreams/goals, and directions seem to change regularly amid the pressures of life. We start at one spot and end up later somewhere completely unexpected.

How do we "define" identity anyway? Is it our personality traits (e.g., flexible, smart, funny, sociable, disciplined, focused, aggressive, commanding, etc.) , or are those just tools that our identity uses in order to do things in the world?

We are more than the ways people can describe us (they are always only describing a little part), so the whole is greater than parts, but we still don't quite know nor can we state clearly who "we" are, at the core.

To most people it's a lifelong search! But you get there slowly and surely! As you age you become more mature, and learn to asert yourself! How many people do you know agree to help others out when they really don't want to! Not all the time but at times anyway and still do it because they can't say 'No' or if they do ... They don't sound serious enough. This all comes with time, as you grow older, you become more self-assured. What you may like now could well turn out to be something you might well dislike in your later years, yet again, it could be something you will still love but! After many years loving it (Whatever it is from music, book or anything else) You will also know your subject so well, people will look upon you as some kind of an expert! It will do your confidence the world of good.

I'm 55 now so you see ... Bit old if you're in your 20s but believe you me! I do know who i amd, what i am, what i like/dislike and make no bone about it! I used to be pretty timid, not know exactly what life was about, never mind what i was about! I do know now. It's taken time but it was well worth it because, and despite my university degrees ... One thing was always lacking ... Life experience, that brought on and developed life skills!

So keep searching, keep enjoying what you like best and simply wait until you wake up one day, in many years to come, and realise that you have accumulated a wealth of data, be it music or anything else, that you know what it is about and furthermore ... What you are about! You will have found your identity then!

Best wishes

Probably not, but it's fun looking. I'm 51 and I still don't know where I belong - hence the Gypsy name. To be honest I don't always want to belong ! My husband & I look on life as a great adventure, we just accept the highs and lows, you see if there are no lows how would we know the highs, just the same as if we have never experienced sadness how can we understand joy !

Not if you keep looking for it, perhaps we only find our true identities is when we accept that we already ARE them. I am not trying to be the true me, I AM the true me!

Will any of us ever find our true identity?

Will you lot get off the bible trail, because god has nothing to do with who you are.

To find your true self, you have to look within yourself, see where your faults and good points are, examine things that have happened within your life, how you dealt with them, what you have learnt about them and yourself.

Step back from situations, and observe them, work out why some people react the way they do and how you would react.

You have to be true to yourself, no one else.

Not unless you humble yourself and come before God in the name of Jesus and ask Him to reveal unto you the purpose for which He created you and placed you where you are on this planet.

Until you do that, you will be like most of the rest of the people on this planet. You will feel an inner restlessness that you will try to satisfy by "becoming" a different person through changing your career or your friends or you leisure activities.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive the things done through the body, according to that which he has done, whether good or bad.

I think it takes a lot of real experiences to find out who you really are.
