Holland is actually a province of The Netherlands. This part of The Netherlands was very important some centuries ago. So technically spoken Holland is NOT the same as The Netherlands, but it became more and more common to speak of The Netherlands as Holland.

The official name is the The Netherlands. Holland is a part of the country, and it became associated with the whole area. "Netherland" means "low land," mainly because almost the entire country is below sea level. That's why the story of the Little Dutch Boy is so popular. If he hadn't put his finger in the dike to hold back the water, it could have flooded the entire surrounding area.

Holland and the Netherlands are the same place. The name "Netherlands" means the land below the water, which is geographically correct. Most of the country is below sea level, so the coastline has a network of dikes to keep the water out.
