1. You can book a ticket directly from chennai to ooty in Nilgiri express
2. Reach Coimbatore and take government bussses from Gandhipuram busstand
3. Take a bus / train to Mettupalayam about 45 km from Coimbartoer and then take toy train to ooty. Its timings are

Apart from these there are trains coming from north also.

Nilagiri Exp is the best for going to Ooty. This train is specially run for people going to ooty only. it goes till mettupalayam. From mettupalayam within few mins u have mountain railway to ooty. the ooty train doesn't depart until niligiri exp reaches there.

Or from CBE u can hire taxis to ooty(costly) or go by govt buses.
