Mostly we think of 50 states, but actually two (Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, I think; net at nite says it is Virginia) are commonwealths rather than states. But net is wrong about California being a republic. It was for a short while -- about a year, I think -- but so was Texas. Both became states when the joined the union.
