I really want to get into photography - ie , taking pics at gigs and maybe get a job with a music magazine at some point but would i be best getting into digital photography or creative digital photography??

When it comes to photography get all the experience you can in every discipline, even old 35mm cameras. Only when you have a basic grounding in all will you know which field is your speciality. If you go to study at college or uni then most of the emphasis will be place on digital as it became the standard format for most media photographers a few years back.

join a camera club or photography group... take some classes at your community college, there is a start.... if you want to get into photography. education and learning doesn't stop, i don't know anyone who has arrived at that magical mystical place of being all knowing and perfect at photography (or anything else), the best i know (and i know some outstanding photographers) are open to the lesson of the moment, they go to schools and take classes and ask questions of others often and sometimes a shoot will go completely south on them anyway, they are not screw up proof.

study photography in college or an art school.
then advertise that you'll do weddings or senior portraits for cheap to build up your portfolio
then maybe talk to a local recording studio about doing pics for some of the indi artists for cheap so you can get some background doing that.

do a photography course at collage and advertise in guitar shops and small recording studios. get some shots of bands and keep a portfolio of your work that you have done it doesn't matter how small it is as it all counts.

buy a camera... take some pictures of unusual things.. make a portfolio up and send it off to as many people in the buisness as you can... hope you click!! (i wouldnt start with weddings yet ,untill you are really confident.. peoples precious memories at your mercy..)
